The butterfly in the chrysalis on the right is ready to eclose (emerge) and will do so within a day. The day the butterfly will emerge, the chrysalis turns from green to black and the wings can be seen! Notice the gold dots on both chrysalises. The black rectangles underneath them are caterpillar poop, which has its own fancy name, frass. If these butterflies are found in Mexico, it will help scientists to gather helpful information about monarchs. He stops to see if there are any caterpillars. If he finds any, he will bring them home to raise them where they will be safe from predators.
