Make Your Mother Proud

In celebration of Mother’s Day, consider doing something kind for Mother Earth. Pick one new way that you will try to Go Green. Maybe it will be to pick up litter when you walk past it, buy fewer disposable plastic water bottles, take a tote bag to the supermarket, or only run the dishwasher when it’s full.

The Internet is filled with ideas for “going green.” Try searching “how to help the earth,” “how to save water,” or “how to save energy.” If the list of choices seems overwhelming, just pick one new thing to do and feel good knowing that you are taking action and making a difference for Mother Earth!

Happy Earth Day!

This important holiday is about appreciating nature, taking action to help the environment, and honoring our planet.  Here are a dozen ideas for how families can celebrate:

  1. Create a piece of art out of used items that would otherwise become trash (search the internet for “recycling craft ideas”)
  2. Play nature photographer! Get outside and enjoy taking photos of nature.  You could also make a photo album of the pictures. Go online to identify the species of birds, flowers, insects, or trees that you photograph
  3. Go for a walk, hike, or bike ride. Keep an eye out for the nature around you.
  4. Cozy up outside to read a book with a nature theme.
  5. Go on a picnic
  6. Help clean up litter somewhere
  7. Read or watch The Lorax by Dr. Seuss with younger kids and discuss it
  8. Camp out for a night in your yard or a park that allows camping.
  9. Plant a small garden in the ground or in flower pots
  10. Choose a new environmental action you will try to take every day like using fewer plastic bags or always turning the lights off when they are not needed.
  11. Participate in an Earth Day fair or event
  12. Have a celebratory meal or a special dessert.  Try to use organic ingredients. Don’t forget to bring a reusable bag to shop for the ingredients.
